An Engagement & Wedding, Capturing Love and History at Canterbury Cathedral and Canterbury Lodge Hotel
As a wedding photographer, certain venues hold a unique kind of magic, blending history, architecture, and romance into one unforgettable experience. Covering a wedding at Canterbury Cathedral and the Canterbury Lodge Hotel in Kent was exactly that — a day rich with grandeur, intimate moments, and timeless elegance, framed by the echoes of centuries past. Our day started at the Canterbury Lodge Hotel, a charming and serene space nestled just a short distance from the cathedral. The morning light filtered softly through the hotel’s large windows, casting a warm, golden glow over the bridal suite. There was an air of excitement mixed with quiet anticipation as makeup artists and hairstylists worked their magic. Annemarie’s dress hung in the corner, an elegant lace gown that caught the light perfectly, creating a play of shadows that made for a beautiful photo.
Natasha focused on capturing candid moments: a bridesmaid sharing a laugh, the bride’s mother adjusting a delicate hairpin, I captured the nervous smile of the groom as he straightened his tie and put on his jacket in a nearby hotel. These are the moments that, when stitched together, tell the story of the day’s buildup — a collection of emotions and movements that lead to the monumental “I do.” No wedding venue compares to the sheer majesty of Canterbury Cathedral. Walking through the grounds with the warm hues of golden hours, I felt the weight of history wrap around me. The soaring Gothic architecture, intricate stonework, and stained glass that tells stories from the ages create an awe-inspiring backdrop that commands both respect and admiration. I knew that each photograph would carry the echoes of a thousand years of history.
Moving to the ceremony, soft light streamed through the tall windows, casting a warm glow. The intimate space, filled with close family and friends, held a quiet reverence. As Annemarie stepped into the room, a hush fell over the gathered guests. She moved gracefully, her dress trailing softly behind her, catching the light with each step. A subtle tremble in her smile revealed the anticipation and excitement she felt in this moment. Dan stood at the front, his hands clasped together, barely breathing as he caught his first glimpse of Annmarie. His eyes widened slightly, and a quiet smile broke across his face, a mix of awe and pure joy. The room seemed to narrow down to just the two of them, their gazes locked, the world outside fading into a blur. That initial glance spoke volumes — a moment heavy with love, anticipation, and the realisation that this was the start of forever.
After the ceremony, the couple moved back to Canterbury Cathedral, where the afternoon light created striking contrasts between sun-drenched stone and deep shadows. The cathedral, lined with arches and historical details, became the perfect frame for the couple’s first moments as newlyweds. I asked them to walk slowly, hand in hand, as I captured their relaxed smiles and the slight swing of the bride’s gown. A few more shots along the cathedral’s exterior showcased its towering spires, with the couple nestled in the foreground, appearing almost as if they were part of a fairytale. The city of Canterbury, with its cobbled streets and quaint, medieval charm, also provided spontaneous photo opportunities as we moved toward the Canterbury Lodge Hotel for the reception.
The transition from the cathedral’s grandeur to the Canterbury Lodge Hotel’s cosy elegance was seamless. The reception area, decorated with soft florals and candlelight, exuded warmth. I captured wide shots of guests mingling, toasting with flutes of champagne, and sharing in the couple’s happiness. As evening fell, I took the couple outside for a final portrait session, just as the twilight cast a soft, dusky blue over the scene. The Lodge, with its inviting façade, provided a romantic backdrop. The last shot was a silhouette of the couple sharing a quiet moment, backlit by the glow of the hotel’s warm lights.
Photographing a wedding at Canterbury Cathedral and the Canterbury Lodge Hotel is more than capturing a celebration; it’s about weaving a story of love set against a backdrop where time stands still. Every frame from this wedding spoke to the deep connection between the couple and the grandeur of their surroundings — a perfect blend of the sacred and the personal, of monumental history and intimate celebration. To photograph such a day is to hold a lens to both love and legacy, immortalising moments that will become cherished memories, shared and remembered for generations to come.
